Check the Flow Direction Markings on the Valve
Most butterfly valves have flow direction arrows on the valve body to indicate the correct flow direction. During installation, ensure the arrow aligns with the fluid flow direction in the pipeline. The flow direction label is usually found on the side or top of the valve.
Confirm the Pipeline Flow Direction
Before installing the butterfly valve, confirm the fluid direction in the pipeline. This can be done by checking the system design diagram, flow direction indicators, or through experimental measurements. If the pipeline flow direction does not match the valve's flow markings, reposition the valve accordingly.
Pre-Installation Pipeline Check
Before installation, clean the pipeline to remove debris and ensure no blockages. This avoids disrupting fluid flow and ensures proper sealing and accuracy of flow direction.
Pay Attention to Valve Installation Position
The installation position is closely related to the flow direction. Depending on the pipeline configuration, the valve may need to be installed horizontally or vertically. An incorrect installation position may cause operational issues or failure. Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions to ensure proper positioning.
Verify Valve Operation
After installation, manually or electrically operate the valve to confirm that it opens and closes smoothly in the intended direction. If there is resistance or the operation conflicts with the flow direction, recheck the installation direction and flow markings.
Application Industries of Butterfly Valve
Water and wastewater systems
Butterfly valves are used in water and wastewater networks for isolation and flow control. They are installed on pump discharge lines for quick shutoff. They regulate flow in treatment plant pipelines, such as sedimentation, aeration, and sludge handling. They help separate zones during maintenance within distribution systems.
HVAC and building services
Butterfly valves are used in HVAC systems for isolating and regulating chilled water, hot water, and condenser water circuits. They are typically installed at pump suction and discharge lines, across heat exchangers, and on AHU coil connections, allowing equipment maintenance without draining the whole loop. With electric actuators, they connect directly to building management systems for automated flow control and precise temperature regulation.
Chemical and process industry
Butterfly valves are used in pipelines carrying cooling water, process water, acids, solvents, and some slurry streams. They function as isolation valves for maintenance, throttling devices in mixing or reaction loops, and block valves on storage tank inlets and outlets. Their compact design makes them practical on large process headers and in congested pipe racks.
Compressed air and gas systems
Butterfly valves are ideal for emergency shutdowns and fire suppression systems where quick isolation is critical. They are typically placed at compressor discharges, receiver tank outlets, and main pipelines for rapid shutoff, and at branch connections to isolate plant sections without shutting off the entire network.
Potable water systems
Butterfly valves are used in potable water networks for isolation and flow regulation in transmission and distribution pipelines. They are installed at pump discharges, treatment plant outlets, storage reservoirs, and distribution mains to allow maintenance without interrupting supply. On branch lines, they help control flow and isolate zones during repairs.
Maintenance of Butterfly Valves
To take precaution against rusting and grease the butterfly valves should be maintained well.
At the top of the valve, there is grease fitting. This may not be observed at the arrival of the valve. Make sure to apply grease at an interval to the neck of the valve till the excess grease flows out.
At the gearbox, you can apply lithium based grease for its maintenance.
You can clean all the parts of the valve easily by using any silicon-based product/lubricant.
Try rotating or cycling the butter valve once a month if it's not used regularly.
