Types of Check Valve

 

 

Vertical Check Valve

Vertical check valve refers to the valve that automatically opens and closes the disc depending on the flow of the medium itself to prevent the medium from flowing back. It is also called check valve, one-way valve, reverse flow valve, and back pressure valve.

 

Low-Temperature Check Valve

The Cryogenic Check Valve is designed for extremely low temperatures. The check valves secure against undesired return flows in pipelines by allowing the flow of liquids or gases in only one direction.

 

Insulated Check Valve

The Insulated Check Valve is a crucial component for ensuring unidirectional flow in cryogenic systems, preventing backflow and maintaining system integrity. Ideally located between Vacuum Insulated Pipes (VIPs), this maintains the temperature with minimal thermal gradient, preventing backflow and maintaining system integrity.

Protection of upstream equipment

Backflow can easily damage meters, compressors, filters, pumps, and other devices built for unidirectional flow. Water hammer is another potentially dangerous phenomenon. Check valves can help reduce the effect of water hammers, especially when the valve is equipped with an end stage damper.

Preventing media contamination or mixing

By preventing reverse flow, check valves prevent the mixing of different media between two reservoirs. For example, in a water treatment plant, check valves prevent treated water from flowing back into the untreated water reservoir.

Preventing drainage

When media is being pumped from a suction reservoir to a discharge reservoir, reverse flow is highly likely to occur when the pump is stopped. Check valves are used to prevent this. The valve type commonly used for this is the foot valve.

Installation Precautions of Check Valves

Proper installation of valves decreases premature wear and tear and ensures proper operation of the valves. Upright installation of the valves and waste removal inside the valve are some proper installation practices. Some others are:
• The internal areas of the valve should be cleaned of fluids before installation.
• The valve load should be supported as pipe clampings on the valve may damage it.
• Enough space should be provided for the installation of the valve.
• When working with flanged connections or bolts, the bolts should be tightened diagonally.
• Check the bolts by increasing the pressure inside the valve. Valve pressure is also increased to confirm the reliability of the seal.
• The materials of the valve components should be checked to ensure no damage was done during transportation or storage of the components.
• The pressure rating of the valve should conform to the requirements.
• The parts of the pipe flanges to contact the valves should be clean and free of residue.

 

Maintenance of Check Valve
 

Keep it clean
Take steps to prevent damage to check valves by keeping the area clean. If you can reach the valve, all you should need is a towel to wipe off dust and dirt. If the debris is caked on, use a wire brush.

 

Keep an eye out
Another easy tip is to do regular inspections of your equipment. It's a good way to spot potential problems before you end up needing expensive repairs.
Check valve inspection:
• Check for leaks
• Look for signs of corrosion, rust or mineral build-up
• Replace the valve if there are extensive leaks or worn/broken pieces
• Open & close the valves to make sure they aren't seizing
• Inspect pressure & temperature of fluid flowing through
• Ensure they aren't close or over the rated limit for the valves
NOTE: Be sure to monitor high-stress and high-pressure valves more frequently.

 

Clean everything up
You'll need to take the valve out and disassemble it to look for debris and scratches. Wash all the parts with hydraulic fluid or whatever fluid is used in your pipe system.
Check the housing for corrosion, damage or a rough surface. Buffing can help take care of rough surfaces.

 

Keep the valve lubricated
This step is often overlooked, but lubrication can keep you from having to replace or repair valves. It can also ensure optimum check valve operation, helping them last longer.
Rotate the valve to make sure the lubricant gets into the valve cavity.
Be sure to use the correct lubricant for your system. Each system has specific requirements and if you use the wrong one it could damage the valves. For example, lubricants with clay or other solid-based thickeners can harden, leaving residue behind.

 

Apply protective insulation
Extreme temperature changes can affect check valve functions. They can even cause expensive damage. If your pipes are outside, you may need to add and inspect protective insulation as part of your maintenance routine.
