Types of Ball Valve

Electric Ball Valve

Electric ball valve is a valve that rotates around the axis of the valve stem according to the movement of the valve disc. The change of valve seat port is in direct proportion to the valve disc travel. It is mainly used to cut off or connect the medium in the pipeline, and can also be used to regulate and control the fluid. It is a pipeline pressure element for industrial automation process control.

 

T Three Way Type Ball Valve

The "L" shape cut-out of the ball on an L-port valve sends fluid through 90 degrees from one port to another. The "T" shape cut-out of the ball on a T-port valve can also send from one port to another, but can also be rotated so that the T aligns with the "T" shape of the valve and all three ports are mixed.

 

Floating Ball Valve

Floating ball valves are operated by a shaft, or stem, attached to the top of the ball that turns it 90 degrees (a quarter turn). As the ball rotates, the port is covered or uncovered by the wall of the valve body, either releasing or halting the flow of media. The stem is attached loosely enough to the ball that, as the ball rotates on its axis, the pressure of the flow pushes the ball against its downstream seat, creating a tight seal.

Components of a Ball Valve

Body (or Housing): The primary structure of the valve, this robust enclosure contains and protects all internal parts. It's crafted from durable materials like metal, thermoplastic, or lined metal to withstand the demands of its operating environment. Inlet and outlet ports on the body allow for piping connections.

 

Ball: The central flow control element, the ball is a sphere with a central hole. Rotating the ball determines whether the bore aligns with the flow path or blocks it. Hollow balls have an internal cavity allowing for higher flow rates. So, increased turbulence and higher flow velocities are worth paying attention to.

 

Stem: The stem connecting the ball to the external control mechanism (usually a handle, but can be automated). Rotating the stem turns the ball, opening or closing the valve. The stem needs robust seals to prevent fluid leaks where it passes through the bonnet.

 

Seats: Soft rings surround the ball, providing a tight seal when the valve closes. Seats prevent leakage by firmly pressing against the ball.

 

Bonnet: An extension on the valve body protecting the stem and its seals. The bonnet might be bolted or welded to the body and is essential for high-pressure/temperature operations.
